Lego has a brilliant kit called Mindstorms NXT. It's a robot with a control unit, rotors and sensors, all can be programmed using a PC.
I myself changed the OS of the control unit, and installed a JVM based OS called leJOS.
Here is one of the first things I've tried, a simple ice cream machine.
